Discover imperial fès, the heart of moroccan heritage

Embark on a journey to Fes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and the heart of its rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Founded in the 8th century by Idris I, Fes became Morocco’s first capital and has long been a center of power, religion, and learning. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where vibrant souks, ancient madrasas, and the famous Chouara Tanneries—where leathercraft has been practiced for over a thousand years—bring the city’s history to life.

Often called the “Mecca of the West,” Fes is also home to Al-Qarawiyyin, the world’s oldest continuously operating university. The city’s stunning mosques, palaces, and intricate zellige tilework reflect centuries of Islamic and Andalusian influence. As a hub for scholars, artisans, and traders, Fes played a crucial role in shaping Morocco’s identity.

But Fes is just the beginning. Beyond the city, you’ll find the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes—both rich in history and offering a glimpse into Morocco’s past. With its blend of heritage, culture, and unforgettable excursions, Fes promises a journey you won’t soon forget.

Suggested itinerary

  • On arrival day, your private driver will pick you up at the airport. You 'll be staying at a 5* riad in the medina: Karawan Riad in a junior suite (or Riad Fes Maya, if preferred).

  • At 10:00 a.m. you will meet our city guide at your riad for a 3-hour private walking tour of the old town (medina). You'll learn about the history of the city and discover some secret places, with a special focus on the Andalusian district where you will be staying.

Then stroll freely in the medina and experience the captivating bustle of this 1200-year-old city. Watch traditional artisans work their craft (ah, the blue ceramics of Fès and the centuries-old tanneries!).

Walk through the Talaa Kbira & Sghira streets, visit the Medersa Bou Inania 14th-century college with its geometric mosaic artwork, observe the hydraulic clock, enjoy Nejjarine square and its beautiful fountain, visit the Moqri Glaoui palace...

    • Meknès, imperial city (50 min drive from Fez): You will feel like you're traveling back to the time of the Idrisside and Almohad dynasties. Despite being the fourth city of Morocco, Meknès has a small town vibe. Magnificent walls and gates, El Mansour Palace, Moulay Ismail mausoleum (reopened in 2022 after years of restauration), souks and tanneries, Jewish quarter…

NB: some key Unesco sites currently closed for renovation, most notably the Bab Mansour gate and El Mansour Palace (updated Q4, 2024).

    • Ancient site of Volubilis (40 min from Meknes): Enjoy a guided visit of the most important Roman ruins of Morocco. In the first century, Volubilis was one of the capitals of Juba II, king of Mauritania. Within the walls, discover the capital, the arc of triumph, the thermal baths, the basilica, the house of Venus... Visit of approximately 2 hours (16€/pers, entry to be paid on the spot with guide, 7€ without guide).

    • Optional activity: Domaine de la Zouina, award-winning winery at the world competition of Brussels in 2020 (Epicuria and Volubilia wines)

    • On Day 4, it's time to relax in Moroccan style. At your riad, enjoy a traditional hammam session including a scrub with black soap, followed by a 45-minute relaxing massage (to be planned in together).

    • The rest of your day is free to continue your visits or do some shopping.

    • Optional activities in Fès: a local cooking or baking class, a craft workshop, or a photography walk & workshop with a young Fassi professional photographer (3 hours minimum).

  • After breakfast, private airport transfer from your riad.
